Movano Evie Ring guide: Everything you need to know about the smart ring

The Evie Ring is now available for sale – after we waited most of the last year.

It’s exciting for a number of reasons. First, it’s finally a wearable device that’s designed with women in mind. 

That’s not just the physical design, which in itself is refreshing, given that most wearables for women are simply smaller versions of the men’s device.

But Movano says that its metrics will also be geared toward helping women understand their health better.

Here’s everything you need to know about the Movano Evie:

Price and release date

The Movano Evie is available to be purchased now – and it costs $269 and can be ordered at eviering.com.

Unlike the Oura Ring, there are no subscriptions or ongoing costs.

The Movano Ring will be shipped in January 2024, so there is a short delay.

It comes in a choice of three colors: silver, gold, or rose gold.

The design is pretty unique, as it doesn’t round to form a full circle. Movano says that this will help the ring adapt to changes in finger size during the menstrual cycle.

Compatibility and regions

The Movano Ring is US-only for now, and there’s no option to ship to any other region. 

And what’s more, it’s iOS only. However, we contacted Movano and a spokesperson told Wareable that Android compatibility would land in “Q2 2024”. So if you’re using an Android smartphone, there’s even longer to wait.

So what does the Movano Ring do out of the box? According to Movano it will track:

• Sleep stages and duration
• Resting heart rate
• Heart rate variability
• Blood oxygen saturation (SpO2)
• Respiration rate
• Skin temperature trends
• Steps
• Active minutes
• Calorie burn

That stacks up favorably to the likes of Oura, Ultrahuman, and non-ring wearables such as Whoop. 

However, Oura has moved to add stress tracking and enhanced biometric fertility and cycle tracking – so it will be interesting to see how Movano approaches that. As we'll see below, there's lots of focus on logging of feelings and symptoms, but we don't have clarity about how much will be analyzed via the sensors.

There doesn't seem to be a lot of focus on workouts with the Evie Ring. Ultrahuman and Oura both added workout HR as an update, however, neither provides an experience that would replace the likes of a Garmin or Apple Watch.

Movano

Mood tracking will be key

Movano puts a lot of focus on the logging of mood and menstrual symptoms, which enables the estimation of periods and ovulation, to illness, stress, and alcohol consumption. How this is implemented without being annoying will be key to the ongoing usability of the Evie Ring.

Choose which goal you’re chasing

Users can set both daily and weekly goals in five different areas: active minutes, steps, calorie burn, sleep, and mood/symptom. The app automatically adjusts goals that are consistently missed or exceeded.

The Daily Summary

All metrics and goals are displayed in a single graphic that displays the user’s progress toward each goal. This is designed to provide a real-time look at daily progress, and an overall view of health, rather than single metrics.

AI-based insights

Possibly the most exciting aspect of Evie is the use of AI. This will look for correlations and trends, which can offer much more tailored guidance than most wearables. This could include matching step counts to mood, or highlighting when mood or sleep levels could be impacted due to dips in progress.

FDA approval

Another unique feature of the Evie Ring is that Movano has sought FDA approval for each area – and its aim is to make it a medical device in the future.

Movano submitted a 510(k) application to the FDA for the Evie Ring's pulse oximetry feature earlier this year.

A spokesperson told Wareable:

"Their requests are in line with our expectations, and we don’t believe there is anything preventing us from continuing to pursue FDA clearance. 

"We’re aiming to formally reply to their letter in Q1 2024 and will communicate the next steps from there.

However, there are no fears that a delay in FDA clearance would delay the release of Evie.

"We are planning to ship the first Evie Rings in January with or without FDA clearance," a spokesperson confirmed.

Battery life

Movano claims that the Evie Ring has 4+ days of battery life, and recharges in 60 minutes.

Unlike other smart rings, Evie comes with a portable charging case that holds 10+ ring charges so users can charge their ring from anywhere and at any time.

This is more akin to the way wireless earbuds charge, such as the AirPods, than we've seen with smart rings to date.
