How to set up LTE on the Apple Watch

Want to make calls, send texts, and stream music on the go using your Apple Watch? First, you'll need to know how to set up LTE.

Connecting your device to the cellular network means you can receive incoming notifications without your iPhone being within Bluetooth range, and make emergency calls at the touch of a button.

To set up LTE, you'll need two things: an Apple Watch Series 3 or newer that supports the feature ('Bluetooth & Cellular', not just 'Bluetooth') and an active service plan. 

The plan must be through the same provider as your iPhone, although you can set up LTE for a family member who does not have an iPhone, as well. Read our steps below to find out how to do both.

Setting up LTE on Apple Watch

1. Open the Apple Watch app

Using your iPhone, open the Apple Watch application.

2. Select 'My Watch'

Navigate to the 'My Watch' option. Select this, and then tap 'Cellular'.

3. Choose 'Set up cellular'

Select the option to set up cellular. Follow the instructions on the screen - these will vary depending on which carrier you use.

Setting up LTE for a family member

While usually you need an iPhone that uses the same cellular provider as your Apple Watch to set up LTE, it is possible to set it up for a family member who does not have an iPhone.

In this case, you don't need to use the same provider.

1. Open the Apple Watch app

First, open the Apple Watch app on your iPhone.

2. Select 'All watches'

Choose the 'All watches' option and select the Apple Watch that you'd like to set up for LTE.

3. Choose 'Cellular'

Touch the word 'Cellular' on the screen, then tap 'Set up cellular'. Follow the instructions on the screen - this will vary depending on your provider.
