First leaked back in August, the Samsung Gear VR gained officialdom over in Berlin at IFA 2014 - the virtual reality headset that takes on the likes of the Oculus Rift and Sony's Project Morpheus...albeit with a little help from the former.
As reported, Oculus is partnering up with Samsung for its VR assault - the Korean company worked with the Facebook-owned virtual reality specialist to develop the software aspects of the Gear VR.
Unlike the Oculus Rift developer kit, which requires a PC for its VR experiences and Project Morpheus, which works in tandem with a PS4, the Samsung Gear VR is powered by either a Samsung Galaxy Note 4 or a Samsung Galaxy Note Edge.

The duo of new Note phablets were also given an official launch at the Berlin-based expo and provide the visuals, and the processing power, for the Gear VR. These mobile devices simply slot in, in front of the lenses, into a Micro USB dock.
The new Note handsets both have a 2560 x 1440 QHD Super AMOLED display, meaning a spilt VR resolution of 1280 x 1440 for each eye on Samsung Gear VR. It has a 60Hz refresh rate and a 96 degree field of view.

The Samsung Gear VR will launch with its own app store and the Korean company tells us there will be at least 100 apps at launch. It will be compatible with both Bluetooth audio headsets and Bluetooth game control pads.
There is no price or release date details yet for the Samsung Gear VR, although we're told it will launch this year. We'll keep you updated.
